God is in the city (Psalm 46: 6)
Located in the heart of the Mission, the Verbum Dei Urban Spirituality Center makes prayer and spiritual resources accessible in the busyness of every day life, for individuals, groups, students, professionals, parents, and people of all ages and ethnicities.
One learns to discover God present in the noise and on-going activity.
There is a river whose streams bring joy to God’s city (Psalm 46:5)
The Verbum Dei Urban Spirituality Center, offers a space to listen for the stream of living water which runs in and through all. We offer spiritual resources, prayer groups, retreats, etc. to help people learn how to pray and cultivate a spiritual life in the midst of the hectic-ness of urban life. People come from all over the Bay Area and across the USA for our retreats, weekly prayer groups and formation. It also serves as an international Verbum Dei center of formation and mission. Over fifty sisters have been formed here, and countless lay women, men, young adults, and teens who are now engaged in missionary projects around the world.
Urgent needs
The VD urban Spirituality Center resides in a building constructed in 1914. It was originally built as an Evangelical Church. In 1948, Russian Orthodox nuns purchased it as their convent. When they were no longer able to maintain the building, they were overjoyed when a group of young missionaries were looking for a home. After purchasing the property in 2001, immediate renovations began. Since then, work on the property has continued, however, due to the age of the house there is a need for major improvements in the infrastructure of the house including plumbing, electrical upgrading and the facade.
