Verbum Dei spirituality and the incarnational dynamic of human expression has been at the very heart of the Verbum Dei charism from its beginning.
It is not simply that the community was founded by a poet and musician and attracts an over average number of visual artists, musicians, poets and creative thinkers, but it seems a characteristic of the charism itself. One might locate the source of the relationship between Verbum Dei spirituality and art in the kind of prayer that is reflected in the story of the Annunciation as Mary’s prayer in the Scriptures: Thinking and loving through a process of creation that is springing forth from a rather intense dialogue with God. It is one of the longest dialogue of this kind remembered in the Scriptures.
The question about Verbum Dei spirituality and the arts is actually a question about the way how prayer is rooted in this kind of “Annunciation” dialogue as human- divine exchange while praying with Scripture that is typical to the Verbum Dei charism. The creative process launched by this way of process expresses itself in music, composing, writing, visual art, interior design, performance, entrepreneurial ideas and any ways of the expression of grace the person may find in her life as fitting to her personality and talents.
In this way arts are understood as service to the Word and fulfill in a unique way the foundational theme of the Verbum Dei spirituality: We will remain at prayer and the service of the Word.
